1. What is the ISSN Register?

Each ISSN assigned to a serial publication is registered in an international database, the ISSN Register, formerly known as the ISDS Register (International Serials Data System). It is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for the identification of serial publications world-wide.

2.       About ISSN

The ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) is an eight-digit number which identifies periodical publications as such, including electronic serials. More than one million ISSN numbers have so far been assigned. Publishers or other interested parties (libraries, documentation centres...) may request the assignment of an ISSN to a given periodical, if it does not yet have one. The ISSN is the standardized international code which allows the identification of any serial publication, including electronic serials, independently of its country of publication, of its language or alphabet, of its frequency, medium, etc. The ISSN number, therefore, preceded by these letters, and appears as two groups of four digits, separated by a hyphen , has no signification in itself and does not contain in itself any information referring to the origin or contents of the publication.

ISSN numbers are assigned by the ISSN national Centers coordinated in a network. All ISSN are accessible via the ISSN Register. The ISSN is not "just another administrative number". The ISSN should be as basic a part of a serial as the title. As a standard numeric identification code, the ISSN is eminently suitable for computer use in fulfilling the need for file update and linkage, retrieval and transmittal of data. As a human readable code, the ISSN also results in accurate citing of serials by scholars, researchers, information scientists and librarians. In libraries, the ISSN is used for identifying titles, ordering and checking in, claiming serials, interlibrary-loan, union catalog reporting etc.

3.  What is the structure of ISSN records?

Each of the bibliographic records which compose this Register contains, besides the unique authority elements (ISSN - key title - abbreviated key title), supplementary information, indispensable or useful for the identification of the publication concerned (frequency of publication, language, other forms of the title, place of publication, publisher...) and of the links which may associate it to other serial publications, which are also identified by different ISSN (former title(s), other language editions, other media editions...).

4.  What is the size of the ISSN Register?

This database, constantly updated in the framework of the network, has an annual growth of between 40,000 and 60,000 ISSN (corresponding to an equal number of records and identified publications); around 80,000 amendments and modifications are made each year. The statistics of the ISSN Register give important data concerning its coverage, growth etc.

5.  What is the availability of the ISSN Register?

The ISSN Register, published by the ISSN International Centre in Paris, is available on the web: the ISSN Portal, Z39.50 access, and the Raw Data file.

How frequently is it updated ? The online access through the Web is updated on a weekly basis. The CD-ROM edition is published quarterly.

6.  How to get an ISSN number?

1. The first step to be taken is to check whether an ISSN National Centre exists in the country of publication. If this is the case, the publisher should send the request to the ISSN Centre concerned. 2. Multinational publishers should check the appropriate list which indicates which ISSN National Centre should be contacted.

3. The International organizations listed in the "Yearbook of International Organizations" are invited to send their ISSN assignment requests to ISSN International Centre.

4. In all other cases, the ISSN International Centre in Paris should be contacted.
